Review: Fiddlers Three

“What sets this recording apart from the usual cluster of Baroque music releases is the inclusion of many hitherto unheard music from an assortment of neglected or overlooked composers employed as court musicians for King Charles II. All performed with care and attention to period performance details by the members of the Musical & Amicable Society. Something that should be of interest to one and all Baroque music enthusiasts.

Fine examples are the Suite for Harpsichord by Christopher Preston, the royal harpsichordist at the time. Played with intuitive flair by musicologist and keyboardist Martin Perkins. The folksy yet trend-setting Divisions on 'I am the Duke of Norfolk'which is sure to haunt your musical mind all day. The innovative for its time Suite for solo violin in scordatura in D minor by Davis Mell, considered to be one of the top violinists of the day, performed with freedom of expression by violinist Catherine Martin.”
